Ukraine Flights Cancel with the Developing War Threat

As worries of a Russian invasion mount, Air France and Lufthansa are the latest carriers to cancel flights into Ukraine. The French airline announced that planes to and from Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, will be canceled on Tuesday as a “precautionary measure,” considering the security situation.

“Air France will regularly reassess the situation and remind us that the safety and security of its flights, its customers and its crews is an absolute imperative,” Air France issued a statement on Monday.

Lufthansa, a German airline, announced that flights between Kyiv with Odessa, a southern port city, will be suspended until the end of February.

Eurowings, Swiss International Air Lines, and Austrian Airlines have suspended flights, all of which are sections of the Lufthansa Group, all of which are sections of the Lufthansa Group, until the end of the month. KLM, a Dutch airline, was the initial leading foreign carrier to halt flights to Ukraine before this month.

“The safety of our passengers and crew members is our top priority at all times. Due to the current situation in Ukraine, Lufthansa Group airlines are suspending their regular flights to Kyiv and Odessa,” Lufthansa Group stated in a statement.

Flights from the Lufthansa Group to Lviv, Ukraine’s westernmost city, will operate normally. The United States moved its embassy from Kyiv to Lviv last week. The Lufthansa Group, which regularly operates 94 flights into and out of Ukraine each week, announced that impacted passengers rebooking should be on alternate routes.

According to US sources, up to 190,000 Russian and separatist troops are stationed close to Ukraine’s boundary, preparing to attack.

Despite concerns from the West, Russia recovered Crimea, which had become a section of an independent Ukraine, until 2014. Russian-backed rebels took control of parts of the Donbas area’s eastern Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts during the conflict.

Whenever a Malaysia Airlines aircraft from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur got shot down in eastern Ukraine in 2014, 298 individuals were killed. According to a Dutch inquiry, the attack was carried out with a missile launcher linked to the Russian military. Russia has denied the allegations on several occasions.
