Peaky Blinders Viewers are ‘in tears’ as the Show Honours Helen McCrory

Last year, the actress who played Shelby family matriarch Polly Gray in the famous drama died.

Fans have eagerly anticipated the return of Peaky Blinders.

The sixth and final series started (February 27).

However, many were moved to tears when the show devoted its first-ever episode to the late Helen McCrory.

Polly Gray, the matriarch of the Shelby family in the blockbuster criminal drama for the preceding five seasons, died of cancer last April there at the age of 52.

The show dealt with her unavailability at the beginning of the next season by incorporating her demise into the plotline, which sends members of the Shelby family into a tailspin.

Before the next episode, a collage of scenes summarising the preceding events was displayed, with McCrory reprising her part as Polly.

Tommy Shelby, portrayed by Cillian Murphy, enters the film with a dramatic opening scene and therefore is soon confronted with the outcomes of his actions when a cart of dead bodies is sent to his door.

The scene turns to a photo of Polly once she opens the body bags while crying, hinting that she is one of the victims.

Polly was put to rest with her painting in a funeral scene.

Polly’s son Michael, portrayed by Finn Cole, remarks as he watches the dead burn at a memorial service: “Mum, it was the ambitions and strategies of one man that caused this. And I swear on the devil of the almighty God, no matter what it takes, no matter how many lies I have to tell, I will take revenge on Tommy Shelby.”

The remainder of the programme follows different members of the Shelby family as they cope with Polly’s death.

With the first of six programmes concluded, a tribute to McCrory appeared on the screen.

“Dedicated to the memory of Helen McCrory OBE ‘Polly Gray,’ birds chirped as the message was read.

And the audience was moved and became emotional.

“Sobbing at the opening scene of #PeakyBlinders That must’ve been so hard for the cast to film. They look heartbroken. Helen McCrory was truly outstanding,” @WrightOnAir tweeted.
